Program Coordinator

The Governor’s Committee on Scholastic Achievement (GCSA), a private, not-for-profit organization, runs a city-wide one-to-one mentoring program which pairs students in under resourced public high schools with professional mentors at Fortune 500 companies in Manhattan. The program is a four-year commitment for students and aims to stimulate and support their high school success as they strive for college and other positive career paths. Weekly mentoring classes in participating high schools supplements the mentoring relationship and seeks to facilitate the process of self-exploration, and support educational and career development, and build social and financial literacy skills in students.

The GCSA is currently seeking a part-time Program Coordinator to assist with its program sites. The Program Coordinator will support the work of GCSA’s Education Director and the Executive Director by:

• Serving as a liaison among participating schools, corporations and GCSA;

• Working collaboratively with in-school coordinators and school administration;

• Developing and implementing curriculum to be used in participating schools that suits the vision and mission of GCSA;

• Working with college bound staff including college prep and SAT prep specialists;

• Conducting in-school needs assessment in conjunction with school coordinators and administrators;

• Assisting with mentor and mentee trainings;

• Identifying and meeting with community educational and vocational organizations interested in partnering with GCSA;

• Scheduling workshops, field trips, and other related activities for participating schools that address a variety of educational, vocational and recreational themes;

• Maintaining up to date records on students and activities;

• Attending staff meetings.

Qualifications include:

• BA, Masters preferred in education or related field;

• 2-3 years prior teaching experience, preferably high school age;

• Flexible schedule, ability to work after school at various city-wide school locations;

• Experience developing curriculum

• Ability to work effectively both independently and in a group;

• Knowledge of existing educational and vocational programs in the NYC area, including not-for-profits and higher education;

• Expertise in progressive experiential education and “Project Adventure” style learning;

• Sensitivity to the needs and interests of adolescents;

• Able to work effectively with both corporate partners and school personnel

• Familiarity with conditions in underserved public high schools;

• Positive attitude, patience and sense of humor.
