I am too old for cliques
April 12, 2008 – 3:24 amI am almost 40 years old. I realize that I am older than most of my fellow students, but I figure we’re all equals because we’re all students studying for new careers, whether it’s a first career or a second or third.
However, there are times when I get rather fed up with some of my fellow students because they remind me of the girls I hated in high school. They gossip. They giggle. They chat and pass notes in class (except now the notes are on their cell phones) while the teacher is talking or a fellow student is talking.
This morning I tried to get a seat in the front of the class to make it easier to hear the teacher. Two of the students in that class have really bad coughs, and I have a hard time hearing the teacher when people on either side of me are coughing. I admire their dedication to being in class, but I honestly wish they would go home.
But I could not get a seat in the front because the girls in the front row were saving seats for their friends (who didn’t even show up.) When their friends didn’t show up, they used the empty seats for footrests. I had to drag a chair away from one of the computers and squish into the second row, which was already pretty much full.
I wish I’d said, “I am sitting here anyway.”
I really like Sarah, one of my fellow legal-secretary students. I think she has a bit of a hero-worship thing going for me because she keeps telling me how brilliant she thinks I am. When I told her this afternoon, “Wow, I did better than I thought I would (regarding my grades) she said, “I knew you’d do great. You’re so smart.”
We were divided into teams today in one of our classes, and we were allowed to request one specific person to be on our teams, though with no guarantee you’d get that person. Sarah asked for me, and I asked for Sarah, but our request was not granted. Sarah actually said to me, “I hope you don’t mind, but I asked for you to be on my team.” I was flattered, but I don’t know why she thought I would mind.
My goal for when I finish (other than the obvious of getting a great job): to become valedictorian of my class. They’re currently advertising for a valedictorian for this year’s graduating class, and I want to be valedictorian for next year’s graduating class. Criteria are: attendance of 95 percent or better (mine is currently 100 percent); grade point average of 3.5 or above; comfort in speaking to a large group of people (well, duh, Toastmasters.)
